Photograph of Red Thunder Cloud, "last native speaker of the Catawba Indian language." Researchers should be aware that Red Thunder Cloud's claims of being a native Catawba speaker are disputed. Regardless of his heritage, Red Thunder Cloud (1919-1996) was a linguist and ethnologist who worked with indigenous people to document their history.

Red Thunder Cloud was also known as Carlos Westez or Cromwell Ashbie Hawkins West. Researchers should be aware that there is some controversy regarding Red Thunder Cloud's claims of Catawba heritage.
