Long Island Herald, Vol. 1, No. 6, June 14, 1791, pgs. 1-4. David Frothingham was Long Island's first Printer. Dr. Buell offered him a room in Clinton Academy, he accepted. His paper was called Frothingham's Long-Island Herald. The first issue was, Vol. 1, No. 1, Tuesday, May 10, 1791. He engaged Jonathan Conkling as Post-Rider. The notorious Stephen Burroughs was a contributor to articles entitled, "The Philanthropist." The paper was discontinued about the time of the Political Rally at Bridgehampton (1798), which was one of the opening guns of the campaign that made Thomas Jefferson President. Frothingham attended this rally and never returned to Sag Harbor. He went on to assist in the publication of Greenleaf's New York Journal and Patriotic Register, after Thomas Greenleaf died during the Yellow Fever epidemic. Frothingham wrote an article about "The Act for supplying the City of New York with pure and wholesome water." This article offended Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton started action against Frothingham, which sentenced him to Bridewell (prison), and included fines totaling $3000.00. It is not clear, how and when David Frothingham died. There is no record he was ever released from Bridewell (prison).
